Officer Schemes

There are two schemes open to Army Reserve Officer applicants who have successfully passed the Officer Selection Board (OSB).

They are the Army Reserve Commissioning Course Scheme and the Malone Scheme. Both of these schemes begin with the Initial Officer Training (IOT) course which is normally begun in January of the year following the Officer Selection Board.

Initial Officer Training

All Officer Cadets, whether full-time or part-time, are required to complete Initial Officer Training (IOT), a six week full-time course designed to introduce the cadets to the basic individual military skills required to be an effective member of the NZ Army. These military skills include navigation, weapon handling, radio-telephone procedures and living in the outdoors.

The Army Reserve Commissioning Course

This scheme is for those who do not wish to complete a tertiary degree as part of their Army Reserve Officer training, or those who may already have a degree or similar qualification.

To be eligible for this scheme, applicants need to be a minimum of 17 years old. Applicants need to have attained NCEA Level 2 with 8 credits at Level 1 or above in Maths and 10 credits at Level 1 or above in Reading and Writing, or alternatively, a maximum of 20 in their best four sixth form subjects with at least a 5 in English.

At the completion of Initial Officer Training, you will return to your Army Reserve Unit and continue on with part-time training until the following January when you will attend the 7 week Commissioning Course and graduate as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserve of New Zealand's Army.

Army Reserve Commissioning Course

The Malone Scheme

This is an extramural degree and commissioning course programme with the aim to produce Army Reserve graduate officers for the New Zealand Army.

The military training process is the same as for the Army Reserve Commissioning Course scheme, except that in between your military training commitment you will pursue an undergraduate degree with financial assistance from the New Zealand Army.

To be eligible for this scheme, applicants must meet the academic requirements for their chosen University and course of study.

Financial Assistance

The following financial assistance is provided to Malone officer cadets for the duration of their studies (for up to 3 years):

  • Students are reimbursed $3,500 for study fees upon the successful completion of each year's course of study,
  • A taxable allowance of $6640.10 is provided for accommodation costs, living expenses and textbook allowance, and
  • An incentive bonus of $1000 per year to cadets who maintain an A- or better, average throughout their studies.

Commitment to Serve Programme

After commissioning you will be required to commit to serve 20 days per year for six years in the Army Reserve, which must be completed within eight years of commissioning, thus allowing for up to 2 years leave from training within this timeframe.

Limitation

The Malone Scheme is limited to 15 Officer Cadets per year.
