Pay and Conditions

The NZ Defence Force has recently changed the way that service personnel are remunerated.

The new salary philosophy comprises:

  • Base salary - Which has been benchmarked or Market Indexed, plus;
  • Superannuation - Employer and the employee contributions, plus;
  • Military Factor

The three components listed make up the Total Fixed Remuneration (TFR) for all service personnel.

The starting Army Reserve TFR for each rank is indicated below, however, this can vary significantly depending on what trade and specialisation you join, the number of years in the rank, skills gained and courses completed. Promotion between ranks is based on competencies, courses completed and satisfactory performance.
