Driver

As a driver in the Army, you will be a member of a tightly knit section of four to six vehicles, operating within a Combat Service Support organisation. You will be trained to operate your vehicle by day and night, anywhere in the world, and in all weather conditions and terrain. You will be driving, operating and maintaining General Service vehicles and you will gain a range of licences, licence endorsements, and NZQA unit standards towards New Zealand Road Transport Industry National Certificates.

Post Initial Training

After Initial Training your next step is to learn how to operate the Army's standard Unimog 4x4 Truck. You will complete a two week driver course where you will learn how to operate vehicles in convoy, off-road handling and other driving and tactical skills.

Promotion

Once you have gained a suitable level of experience and demonstrated leadership potential, you will have the opportunity to progress through the Non Commissioned Officer Ranks. The first course you will do is a Junior Non Commissioned Officers course (JNCOs) which will foster and develop your leadership and instructional abilities in order to give you the skills to lead and train a small team of soldiers.

Further Promotion

Army Reserve members of the Royal New Zealand Army Logistics Regiment have the opportunity to rise to the rank of Warrant Officer, with promotion beyond Corporal being dependent upon the attendance of further Trade and Promotion Courses. These include the Senior Non Commissioned Officers Course, and Warrant Officers Course.

Overseas

Drivers are employed wherever vehicles are deployed overseas. You could find yourself working as a Section Driver for a Rifle Section, at the wheel of a Pinzgauer Light Operational Vehicle in East Timor or the Solomon Islands, or working within a Vehicle Section providing supplies to UN Observation Outposts in the Sinai Desert.
