Signaller

This job involves working with the sophisticated communications equipment and technology which keeps the Army's command and control systems up and running. You will learn to set up and operate multi-channel communications, long and short range radio networks and satellite terminals. Out in the field, you could find yourself in a mobile radio detachment or possibly a vehicle mounted radio/field line detachment.

Royal New Zealand Corps of Signals

Post Initial Training

Once you have completed your Army Reserve Initial Training and gained the skills required of all soldiers, you will progress onto specialist signals training.

RNZSigs Corps Training Course

This is a two week course designed to teach you the skills required of a Communications Systems Operator in the Royal New Zealand Corps of Signals. During this course you will learn how to operate the different types of Platoon Level Radio Equipment, Employ Communications Procedures and lay communication lines.

Promotion

Once you have gained a suitable level of experience and demonstrated leadership potential, you will have the opportunity to progress through the Non Commissioned Officer Ranks. The first course you will do is a Junior Non Commissioned Officers course (JNCOs) which will foster and develop your leadership and instructional abilities in order to give you the skills to lead and train a small team of soldiers.

RNZSigs Promotion Courses

Once you have completed your JNCOs Course and attained further experience as a Lance-Corporal within the Royal New Zealand Corps of Signals, you will be eligible to attend the RNZSigs Detachment Commanders Course.

RNZSigs Detachment Commanders Course
This course is designed to allow RNZSigs JNCOs to progress to the Rank of Corporal and command a Signals Detachment. This course is a combined course, and is attended by both Regular and Reserve RNZSigs JNCOs. The course is four weeks in duration but may be completed in two phases by Reserve Soldiers, with those who cannot attend the full four weeks completing the first 14 day Phase of the course and then returning the following year for the second Phase.

Further Promotion

Army Reserve members of the Royal New Zealand Signals Corps have the opportunity to rise to the rank of Warrant Officer Class Two, with promotion beyond Corporal being dependent upon the attendance of further Trade and Promotion Courses. These include the Senior Non Commissioned Officers Course, RNZSigs Troop Sergeants Course and RNZSigs Communications and Information Systems Manager Course.

Overseas

Communication Systems Operators are employed on a variety of overseas deployments. Opportunities exist for Army Reserve Signallers to volunteer for deployment as Patrol and Command Post Signallers in places such as the Solomon Islands and East Timor.
