Soldier or Officer?

Officers are the Army's Leaders and Managers, trained from the start of their careers to plan, supervise and lead tasks in a timely and effective manner.

Soldiers are the Army's Specialists, trained to perform key roles with the highest professionalism. Soldiers may also assume leadership and management roles as they gain experience and progress through the ranks.

Regardless of whether you apply to become a Soldier or Officer, the basic joining and fitness requirements are the same, however, there are additional academic requirements for Officer Selection. These are:

  • Minimum of NCEA Level 2 with 8 credits at Level 1 or above in Maths and 10 credits at Level 1 or above in Reading and Writing. Or;
  • Maximum of 20 in your best four sixth form subjects with a minimum of 5 in English.
