10 February 2009

Ninety-five Territorial Force recruits began their RIT 2 (Recruit Initial Training) course at Waiouru in November with most of them staying on to continue with their RIT 3 course in December.

After a break at Christmas, 70 Territorial Force soldiers spent January completing RIT Module 4. A large number of TF soldiers want to complete Module 4 this year, so a repeat course is being held this month (February) for another 40 students.

Recruit initial training is divided into four modules, the first of which is a two-day course held in the soldier’s home location. The next three modules are held in Waiouru by the Army’s Territorial Force Company.

Most of the modules are held between November and April which is the optimum time for university students, self-employed people and seasonal workers.

All TF soldiers who want to deploy to Solomon Islands or Timor Leste must have completed all four modules before they will be considered for selection to deploy.

The modules provide the base level of competency in all core skills before personnel attend pre deployment training.

The Waiouru-based Land Training Doctrine Group plans to analyse the training provided to TF in order to identify and reduce the gap between RF and TF recruit training.
