For many years saluting was performed with the hand farthest from the officer saluted. This involved saluting with the left hand when passing an officer on the right hand side. To certain sections of Indian troops, however, saluting with the left hand was an insult and this method was abolished in 1918.

Air Force locates lost tramper

Sandro Piccapietra, a Swiss tramper missing on Mount Arthur since last Thursday, was rescued by a Royal New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopter on Monday. Crewman Sergeant Paul Hunter spotted the 24-year-old tourist at about 10.45am as the helicopter was transporting volunteer search and rescue personnel into the area.
