For many years saluting was performed with the hand farthest from the officer saluted. This involved saluting with the left hand when passing an officer on the right hand side. To certain sections of Indian troops, however, saluting with the left hand was an insult and this method was abolished in 1918.

Antarctica: 50th anniversary of Scott Base

Defence Force Chief  Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae has accompanied the Prime Minister Helen Clark, Sir Edmund Hillary, and other dignitaries to Antarctica to mark the 50th anniversary of Scott Base on Saturday 20 January 2007.  The connection between the New Zealand Defence Force and the Antarctic dates back to 1956 when the Navy vessel HMNZS Endeavour carried personnel, dogs, aircraft and stores to the Antarctic to set up Scott Base.
