Second Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Battalion Group

Introduction

The 2nd Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Battalion Group is an Army Reserve unit that consists of part-time soldiers and officers from North of the Waitaki River through to Golden Bay at the top of the South Island. The Unit is divided into Company sized groups that are located in Nelson, West Coast, Timaru, Ashburton, Blenheim and Christchurch while the Headquarters is located at Burnham Military Camp, just south of Christchurch.

Role

The role of the unit is to provide trained volunteers for overseas operations as required, as well as a trained pool of personnel to be able to respond to civil emergency tasks within New Zealand. In order to meet these roles the Unit trains regularly throughout the year. Training is broken down into 3 hour training nights, regular weekend exercises and an annual two-week exercise.
